This form of order picking is widely used for picking goods off the pallet. It is ideal for warehouses which stock a small range of items in huge quantities per item with a medium picking frequency.
As a rule, the picking pallet is placed on the ground level and, in some instances, f. ex. in the case of low-height pallet loads, on the second level also.
The levels on top serve as a supply buffer for the same stock item.
As the buffer stock is kept close to the order picking station, pallet relocation onto the ground level is fast and easy.
There is no separation between loading and picking aisles. In order to avoid interference of re-stockers with order pickers, loading and order picking is effected according to a time schedule.
The pallets can be handled with standard fork lift trucks without sophisticated auxiliary equipment.
Goods are picked with powered as well as non-powered order picking vehicles which can be upgraded with auxiliary equipment in order to extend the standard reach height of 1.7 m to 2.5 m.
The required aisle width depends on the vehicle type chosen and on the "traffic regulations", i.e. whether there is one-way or two-way traffic in the same aisle.
